Die Bezeichnung für das Ende des Mastdarms (mhd. after, ahd. aftero) ist eine Substantivierung des im Nhd. untergegangenen Adjektivs ahd. aftero, mhd. after »hinter; nachfolgend« und bedeutete dementsprechend zunächst »Hinterer« (vgl. die unter ↑ hinter behandelte Substantivierung »Hintern«). Das Adjektiv gehört zu der Präposition und zum Adverb älter nhd., mhd. after, ahd. aftar, niederd. achter (↑ achter), got. aftra, engl. after, schwed. efter »nach; hinter; gemäß«. Dieses gemeingerm. Wort beruht mit verwandten Wörtern in anderen idg. Sprachen auf idg. *epi-, *opi- »nahe hinzu, auf etwas hin, nach«, vgl. z. B. griech. epí »auf etwas hin« und lat. ob »auf etwas hin, nach«, die in zahlreichen aus dem Griech. und Lat. entlehnten Fremdwörtern als Präfix erscheinen (↑ epi..., ↑ Epi... und ↑ ob..., ↑ Ob...). Zu dieser idg. Präposition gehört wahrscheinlich auch das unter ↑ Abend behandelte Substantiv. – Älter nhd. after »hinter« kam wegen der anstößigen Bedeutung des Substantivs außer Gebrauch. Auch die Zusammensetzungen mit »after«, wie z. B. »Aftermiete« »Untermiete«, sind heute nicht mehr gebräuchlich.
